Book Club: Foreigner 1: Foreigner

This is a post for collecting comments on the book club* (re)read of C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series, starting with the eponymous novel. Feel free to join in if you'd like! Please avoid major spoilers for further books in the series (minor spoilers are fine) since it's not a reread for everyone.

What is the timeframe and will it be discussed online?

The timeframe is roughly "as long as it takes for me and a few friends to read the first book, say some stuff about it, and then move on to the next", but since I'm putting up a post for each book as I get to it personally, I figure it's fine to just keep on commenting whenever you happen to finish reading. Asynchronous is useful for that.

It's all going to be online discussion. People haven't really settled on DW vs. LJ, but I figure they can comment where they like. I'll probably put my comments over on DW, unless I'm responding to someone who commented on LJ.

The Prologues

On reread, the prologues are...okay, honesty, I am still so bored by them. More bored, in fact, because I know that while they're scene-setting for the whole big mess of the setting, I just can't care about any of these characters, because their implied plots are all unresolved. I could engage with mini-stories where characters got tiny plots and arcs: I could deal with infodump: but it keeps giving me characters and no resolution on them. Very frustrating.

Does anyone actually like the prologues sequence on this book?
