Did you know that if you pour Artificial Vanilla Butter & Nut Flavoring Extract into a bottle of Blue Raspberry MD 20/20 it turns a truly horrific shade of green?

Neither did I! Which is a pity, because if I'd known, we could have used that for a deliberate special effect in today's filming. As it is, there was a certain long pause of "oh shit" as our one bottle of MD 20/20 (Blue Raspberry, and very very blue), already shot repeatedly for later scenes in the short film, suddenly changed colors. A great deal of "conceal the bottle in the plastic bag from the convenience store" resulted, and...well. They can probably fix it in the edit.

I thought my responsibility was to show up, hand over the script, and sit back for today's all-day shooting. Turned out I was appointed script supervisor, which meant that I spent every take frantically scribbling down the exact slight variation on the lines-as-written that the actors had actually used, so that they could record them again at the microphone later for dubbing in. And trying to figure out where, exactly, that coffee table had been before we moved it to do the special effect with the throat-cutting, and was the pink book on it at the left or right side, and what hand was this woman carrying this suitcase in when she walked out the door? (Given that we were then shooting the door's exterior in a completely different place...)

Doing a full shoot of a short film--done to reasonably professional standards--was fascinating, in its own way. And not an experience I mean to repeat, if at all possible. Because "fascinating" and "a learning experience" and "really interesting" do not necessarily translate to "seven hours of my life that I'd like to repeat again."

Now I'm going to sit down for a while.
