Today, I went bouldering on Actual Rocks. You know. The kind that are made of stone, and hang out in parks being all ominous and tall and not particularly well marked for how to go up and down them, where anything you can actually use is considered on for that route.
There were only two routes that I made it through, of the three I tried; a low V0 in both cases, I think. But it was exciting! And painful! I got scraped up in all sorts of interesting new places, and tried out an actual chimney climb for my first time ever. Having friends there spotting was an immense reassurance, as falling from several feet up onto pebbles did not seem like it would be a lot of fun. (Generally, I only fell when a few feet up. Barely counts.)
The chimney was definitely the most fun. Trying to work out tiny holds on a fairly flat slab surface is tricky and challenging in its own way, but there are only so many ways to stick your fingers in a single tiny hole. Shimmying awkwardly up a big space between two walls of rock, until I get high enough to grab on top of a big rock wedged between both of them? Pretty awesome.
I should've taken pictures. It was fun.
