There are exciting developments lately in the world of cat & dog diplomatic relations!
Namely, Peejee is getting tired of this whole "hide in the closet and hate the dog" thing. She's still pretty solidly on the side of believing The Dog Must Go, but it turns out sitting in a closet all day every day just isn't very interesting. (And for some reason, all the places she finds to use as a litterbox in there instead of an actual litterbox keep being blocked off, removed, or otherwise made inconvenient for this purpose. MYSTERIOUSLY.) She's gotten into the habit of skulking out of the bedroom in the evenings when we're usually on the living room couch, and sitting on one side of me while the dog is on the other. Human barrier: sufficient to make the dog ignorable.
This morning, I staggered out of bed at 9am (it was a very exciting evening last night!), let Pixel out of her crate while Peejee scuttled back into the closet like usual, fed Pixel, let her outside, and went back to bed. Five minutes later, Pixel came back, jumped on the bed, and curled up next to me.
Five minutes after that, Peejee came out of the closet, jumped on the bed--and found herself right next to Unconfined Dog.
Who frankly was so happy to cuddle up next to her human that she didn't so much as open her eyes over the whole Sudden Nearby Cat issue.
So Peejee was deeply dubious, but went and lay down on my legs, and snoozed there. Woke up a few times, approached the dog to growl or just sniff, went back to lying down... And when I finally got out of bed, she indicated willingness to get within a few feet of the dog for more dubious sniffage.
Pixel has responded by quivering and whining anxiously, because oh my god that tiny long-tailed dog might FINALLY BE HER FRIEND SO EXCITING. And, y'know, I'm hopeful too. It would simplify many things in life if the cats would just get over the whole dog thing and be fine with hanging out with her. It'd simplify some other things if I could just let Pixel sleep on the bed at night, instead of needing to crate her.
...though that might get a big crowded when Rob gets back from Minnesota. Hm. Well, the dog's pretty small, and we already know how to cope with two cats on the bed at night, who together make up two thirds of her weight anyway. I'm sure we'll figure something out.
