So! In a discussion of MG vs. YA fiction, one thing that came up was that the middle grade fiction is more likely to focus on community-building and community ties. Defending family and friends, building things up there. And it seems like YA fiction to a large part is about breaking away from existing bonds and restrictions. Revolutions in YA may be a bit of a cliche, but there's certainly a reason they're a common trope: it's pretty natural for that age group to be invested in destruction, departure, and those sorts of changes.

But I know full well that I'm not very well-read in YA, and it's a pretty broad field. So I am interested in YA novels--especially in SFF areas--that are about defending, building up, restoring, reinforcing, or otherwise protecting an existing community or structure. And not in the sense of "I must take down the corrupt government to protect my family," either. Any suggestions?
