1.10.1 Word was brought back to Caesar that the Helvetii were inclined to make their journey through the land of the Sequani and Haedui, and into the territory of the Santons, who were not very distant from the borders of the Tolosatans--and /that/ nation is in the Roman province.
1.10.2 He understood that if this should happen, it would be a great danger to the province to have warlike men, hostile to the Roman people, as neighbors in an open and grain-bearing land.
1.10.3 For these reasons he assigned T. Labienus as commander of the fortifications he'd made. Caesar himself made a long march into Italy and there conscripted two legions which wintered near Aquilaea, and led three from the winter quarters, which were next on the trip in furthest Gaul through the Alps, and with these five legions went on.
1.10.4 There the Ceutrones and Graioceli and Caturgis tried to hinder the army's journey by using higher occupied positions. Despite these attacks and many battles from Ocelum (which is a distant town of that side of the province) he penetrated the borders of the Vocontii of the more remote province on the seventh day; from there he led the army into the territory of the Allobrogi, and from the Allobrogi into the Segusiavi. These were the first people outside of the province across the Rhodan.

Man, even without tanks, or cars, or fucking guns, it must have been fucking unsettling to see those legions just marching on and on through your country, or what you thought of as your country, anyway. They just sound like the ultimate war machine - moreso than the Spartans, even, the impression I got of the Spartans is they mainly sat on their helots til the huge war (this could be totally wrong). The Romans are pretty fucking modern. Bread and circuses....
