Rather than try to catch up with the last few months since I said anything about my life... Here's a list of Yuletide stories I really liked this year! *cough* And maybe this will remind me to update a bit more around here.
I have sorted these by fandom, but have added an asterisk to those I think are reasonably easy to read without knowing the fandoms in question.
12 Dancing Princesses (traditional fairytale)
Princesses, Dancing: Long and thoughtful, and giving every different sister their own particular take on matters.
* Three Jeweled Branches, and a Gold Cup Too: Interactive fiction! Very easy to play, and it's about the aftermath of the story, with some delightful twists for every potential branch.
Better Off Ted (tv show)
Rated B For Brillig: An amusing story that nails the canon tone of how Veridian Dynamics works and acts, with a nicely handled background triad. Fun footnotes, too.
Bite Me! (webcomic)
* Pantsless And Heroic: Witty, canon-style tone and silliness with some great lines. It's Luther backstory, with a mysteeeeerious monster terrorizing French peasants.
Dwarf Fortress (video game)
An Incomplete Compendium of Magma Use in Dwarven Problem-Solving: An amusing series of in-universe explanations of the joys of magma, and perils of not appreciating it properly.
Discworld: Small Gods (book)
Not In One Day: A series of letters by Brutha, and conversations with his god, in which the aftermath of plot often involves a lot of complicated paperwork. With bonus complaining about philosophers.
The Goblin Emperor/Sunless Sea (book/video game)
* Hull is Other People: Did you know you wanted a fusion between those two canons? I did not, and yet what a strange Neathy delight this ends up being. Very creepy in places, as is appropriate for the second canon.
Sunless Sea (video game)
Beeswax: The Quiet Deviless and a Zee Captain, after a particular incident in the Chapel of Lights. Unnerving and very sexy. MIND THE WARNINGS.
Mad Max: Fury Road (movie)
vaster than empires, and more slow: Planting trees, after the movie. A thoughtful, mythic exploration of the slow work of rebuilding.
Over the Garden Wall (tv show)
* Possessed:
Explaining how Lorna and her Auntie ended up where they did. Creepy and canon-appropriate, and nicely handled.
Rivers Of London (books)
* Lady of the Sea: In which Peter and Nightingale have to deal with mermaids kidnapping young men. It happens.
Hipsters (movie)
* sparrows in champagne: Post-canon with a small AU shift. Brilliant prose, sharp and perfect all the way through. Arranged marriages in the Cold War, and the personal tangling inevitably with the political and the personal again. All you need to know is that the two characters are, respectively, an America-obsessed son of a high Party official, and a Party-obsessed poor girl. They used to share a friend.
Imperial Radch (books)
Constitution Penalty (Imperial Radch): Breq ignoring physical needs, and Sphene being Sphene, with bonus popular Radch entertainment snark.
Bedtime Stories: In which Mercy of Kalr and Seivarden compare notes on meeting Breq, and falling for her.
What The Body Doubts: Seivarden ends up kidnapped by the Presger. Sort of. It's complicated? It's very well done.
Hamilton (musical)
* Interlude (Rise Up):
Hamilton/Everyone, in extensive, clever, often pun-filled verse. Hilarious and rather dirty.
Kim Kardashian: Hollywood/The Matrix (video game/movie)
* Goal: Take The Red Pill: No. Seriously. Read this story. It's funny and tense and a very entertaining meta take on the KKH game. If you've ever played any micropayment flash game, you'll know enough to be able to follow.
