1.1.1 All Gaul is divided into three parts, of which the Belgae inhabit one, the Aquitani another, and those who call themselves the Celts in their own language--they're named Gauls, in ours--the third.

1.1.2 These people all differ from each other in language, habits, and laws. The Garumna river divides the Gauls from the Aquitani, and the Matrona and Sequana rivers divide them from the Belgae.

1.1.3 Of all these the strongest are the Belgae, because they have for the longest time been away from the civilization and refinement of the province, and merchants least often travel to them and bring in things which lead spirits towards effeminate things;

1.1.4 and the next are the Germans, who live across the Rhine, with whom they wage war continuously. On account of this the Helvetii also precede the remaining Gauls in courage, because they fight with the Germans in almost daily battles, since either the Helvetians drive off the Germans away from the Helvetian borders, or themselves wage war in the territory of the Germans.

1.1.5 One part of them (which it is said the Gauls hold) controls the entrance from the Rhode river, which is bounded by the Garumna river, by the ocean, by the borders of the Belgae, even touches the Rhine river on the side of the Sequana river and the Helvetii people, and slopes toward the north.

1.1.6 The Belgae originate from the furthest borders of Gaul, stretch to the lowest part of the Rhine river, and lie toward the north and rising sun.

1.1.7 Aquitania extends from the Garumna river to the Pyrene mountains and that part of the ocean which is toward Hispania; it lies between the setting sun and the west.
