It is hella difficult at times to render elegantly in English what's elegant in Latin, because Latin makes certain clauses much easier to slap around in the sentence in an explanatory fashion than English does. That said, I didn't try for "elegant" so much as "comprehensible" below.
1.2.1 Orgetorix, a most noble and wealthy man, was among the Helvetii for a long time. While Marcus Messala and Marcus Piso were consuls, he--seduced by the desire to rule--created a conspiracy of the nobility and persuaded the citizens to withdraw from their own territory with all their troops;
1.2.2 (and he persuaded them that) it was very easy, since they were superior to all in courage, to obtain power over all of Gaul.
1.2.3 He persuaded them of it more easily by this: because the Helvetii were, by the nature of the country, surrounded on all sides: on one side by the very broad and deep Rhine river, which divides the Helvetian land from the Germans; on another side by the high Iura mountain, which is between the Sequani and the Helvetii; on the third by the Lemannus lake and Rhode river, which divides our province from the Helvetii.
1.2.4 Because of these things, it was the case that they wandered less widely and were less able to make war on their neighbors,
1.2.5 for which reason the men were influenced by great indignation to desire war.
1.2.6 However, because of their great number of people and for the glory of war they considered themselves to have overly narrow borders, which in length lay 240 miles, and in breadth 180 miles.
