I think I've mentioned in here before how much easier it is to clean things, starting from a clean house. And it continues to be so! Oh, I don't like sweeping and mopping any more than I did when I was a kid, but it's more satisfying when it's my house, and it doesn't have the loathsome sensation that it's all Meaningless Effort when it is, in fact, provably possible to return an entire room to a state of tidiness.

And, sheesh, we're eating so much healthier now. A grocery store in walking distance, instead of a drugstore with an aisle of groceries (mostly snack and instant foods) and three convenience stores and a half dozen fast food places on the way? I'm not eating cracker packs and frozen dinners when it's just as fast or faster to slap together a lunch meat sandwich on fresh bread from the grocery store deli. I made baked chicken last night, and even spreading all the ingredients out over the entire island I still had plenty of brightly lit space to maneuver in. And cleanup was easy with a giant, clean sink behind me and a functional dishwasher...

...and, my god, talk about privilege. It's so much easier to do basic functional self-care in an airy, clean environment that's in a convenient location. I don't have a sidewalk for most of the walk to the grocery store, but I don't need to cross the freeway or any busy streets, either. Just being in a nice house in a nice neighborhood has improved my dietary habits almost without any trying on my part, because suddenly it's so much easier and handier and more attractive to eat things I make myself at home. (And let's not forget that I can only do the "at home" part so trivially because I'm married to someone with a full-time job that pays mortgage and bills.)

Money can't make you happy? Pfft. Money has increased my baseline happiness noticeably over the course of the last month. And especially in this country, while you can't buy health outright, money sure as hell can give you a better shot at acquiring and maintaining it.

Class has real physical effects. I need to remember that, when luxuriating in this Very Nice House.

And that basil baked chicken with potatoes that I made last night? It was pretty damn tasty. As was the dessert I made afterward. I should write up my recipe for that; it's pretty easy.

So true - when life is easier, it is easier to sustain it in a healthy way, I have found.
