Time for the Helvetii to have another bad day. That whole "burn down all our houses" plan isn't looking so clever now, is it?

1.8.1 Meanwhile, by the work of that legion which he had available and the soldiers--who gathered together from the province--he built a continuous wall nineteen miles long and sixteen feet high, and also a ditch, from the Lamannus lake (which the river Rhodan flows into) to Mount Iura (which divides the Sequani's territory from the Helvetii).

1.8.2 When this work was complete, he arranged guards, and fortified redoubts, by which he was easily able to hold off anyone who might try to pass against his will.

1.8.3 When that day which he had agreed on with the delegates had arrived, and the delegates returned to him, he said: "I cannot allow a journey through the province to anyone, by the custom and precedents of the Roman people; if you try to break through by force, I will stop you."

1.8.4 The Helvetii, having lost that hope, had ships brought together and several rafts made; others tried to see if they could cross the safety of the Rhodan, which was at its lowest depth of flowing sometimes during the day, but most often at night; they were held back by the defensive structures, a crowd of soldiers, and spears. They abandoned this attempt.
