2.9.1 Therefore with this sort of preparation and attitude they began, and each group stood ready holding these cities as allies in the war:

2.9.2 These were the allies of the Spartans: the Peloponnesians inside the Isthmus, all except the Argives and Achaeans (who were friendly with both sides); and the men of Pellene were alone of the Achaeans to join up for the war at first, and then at last all of them did; and outside of Peloponnese were Megares, Boiotoi, Lokreans, Phoceans, Leukadioi, and Anaktorioi.

2.9.3 Of these, the Corinthians, Megares, Sikuonioi, Pellenes, Heleioi, Amprakiotoi, and Leukadioi sent ships; the Boiotoi, Phokes, and Lokroi sent cavalry; and the other cities sent infantry. This was the alliance of the Spartans.

2.9.4 The allies of the Athenians were the Chioi, Lesbians, Plataeans, the Messenioi who were in Naupaktos, most of hte Akarnanoi, Kerkuraioi, Zakunthioi, and other cities which were tributaries in these sorts of nations: Karia by the sea, Doria (neighbor to Karia), Ionia, Hellespontos, the ones in Thracia, the islands lying between Peloponnese and Crete near the east, and all the Kulkades except Melos and Thera.

2.9.5 Of these, the Chioi, Lesbians, and Kerkuraioi sent ships, and the other sent infantry and money.

2.9.6 Such was the alliance for each side, and their preparation for the war.

2.10.1 And the Spartans, after the Plataea incident, immediately sent messages to the cities down through the Peloponnese to prepare an army outside the allied territory, and supplies, suitable for going abroad, for invading Attica.

2.10.2 And when each city was prepared, during the announced time they came together in the Isthmus with two thirds of each city's force.

2.10.3 And when the whole army had been gathered, King Archidamos of the Spartans, who led this invasion, calling together the generals of all the cities and their leaders and officers, advised them in this way:
